Is Botox dangerous? Facts, risks and the truth behind recent news stories

In recent weeks, news reports and social media posts about dangerous botox injections and even patients allegedly having symptoms of botulism (a rare but serious condition caused by a neurotoxin from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which can lead to muscle paralysis). At DokterEs , we also receive regular inquiries from patients: "Is botox dangerous or toxic?" and "Can botox spread in my body?"

Because there is a lot of misunderstanding going around, in this blog we explain exactly what is true, what in particular is scaremongering, and most importantly (spoiler alert): why botox from an experienced doctor in the right doses absolutely safe is.

What exactly is botox?

Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin: a substance that temporarily relaxes the action of certain muscles. It has been used in the medical world for decades, for example against migraines, excessive sweating and muscle cramps. In cosmetic medicine, we use botox in very small, controlled amounts To soften wrinkles and lines.

Important fact: the cosmetic dosages that we as doctors use are many times lower than the amounts mentioned in the news about "dangerous botox."

Is botox dangerous or toxic?

It is true that botulinum toxin in its pure, uncontrolled form is one of the most powerful substances known. But like everything else in life, it's not a black-and-white story, and it's particularly about balance. In the case of botox, then, safety revolves around dosage.

Case in point:

  • Paracetamol is safe in the right dose, but can be deadly in extreme amounts.
  • Even water can be dangerous if you drink 3 to 4 times the normal daily amount of it.

So that's how it works with botox, too. In normal cosmetic treatment, doctors use between 20 and 60 units, while the amounts that caused botulism in some foreign cases were as high as 1000-1500 units.

Conclusion: When properly dosed by an experienced and certified physician, botox is safe and non-toxic.

How do reports of dangerous botox arise?

The recent posts, particularly from the United Kingdom and Turkey, go virtually always About:

So how do you know if you are getting a safe botox treatment?

Want to make sure your treatment is safe? Then be sure to pay attention to these points:

  • Always choose a BIG-registered doctor with expertise in cosmetic medicine.
  • Ask about the brand of botox used (e.g., Allergan, Ipsen, or Galderma).
  • A reliable clinic can always show batch numbers and origin of the product.
  • Never accept cheap offers over the Internet or treatments outside an official clinic.

Tip: If something sounds too good to be true (often a relatively low price or coming to your home for treatment), it often is. Always do your own research and don't blindly trust the advice of your neighbor who has had a shot at "Salon x around the corner" before. The fact that it did not go wrong with someone else does not necessarily mean that the treatment was applied correctly. So always check the above points and get yourself well informed by experienced and trained professionals.
