What are acne scars?
Acne scars occur when the skin does not fully recover after acne breakouts. Especially with severe or long-term acne, the skin can become damaged to the point that scars are left behind. This happens when the body produces too little or too much collagen during the healing process. The shape and depth of scars depend on how severe the acne has been, how quickly it was treated and how the skin responds to damage. Also, self squeezing, scratching and/or picking at acne spots increases the likelihood of scarring.
There are different types of acne scars:
- Atrophic scars: Small dimples or pits in the skin (most common).

Some superficial blemishes fade over time, but deep scars usually remain visible without treatment. Treatments can offer improvement both on discolorations following acne inflammation, as well as on deep or thickened scars.
The number of sessions required depends greatly on the degree of scarring and the type of treatment. On average, 3 to 5 sessions are needed for visible results, depending on the severity of the scars and skin type.
Most treatments are well tolerated. We also always take into account everyone's personal skin tolerance and condition. If necessary, we use an anesthetic cream to increase comfort, for example with a CO2 laser treatment.
