Remove unwanted hair growth with laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is a treatment method for reducing and removing unwanted hair growth on the body and/or face And suitable for both men and women. At DokterEs , we can safely and effectively treat all skin types via our GentleMax Pro lasers. These lasers are the gold standard when it comes to effective and permanent removal of hair growth. On this page you can read more about the various indications, techniques and results of laser hair removal.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light (laser) to target hair follicles to achieve hair reduction. The light from the laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and then directed to the hair follicle. This causes the proteins in the hair follicle to heat up, eventually effectively damaging them. No new hair can then grow out of the follicle.
Treatment is often used for excessive hair growth, reducing ingrown hairs or as an alternative to temporary methods such as shaving, waxing or depilatory cream.
Why laser hair removal?
Many people opt for laser hair removal because traditional methods such as shaving, waxing or tweezing offer only temporary solutions. These methods can also lead to skin irritation or ingrown hairs. In addition, skin often does not feel smooth within a day.
Laser hair removal offers a more permanent long-term reduction in hair growth. After a series of treatments (6 to 8 on average), hair growth is reduced 80-95%. As a result, the skin feels permanently smooth.
Who is laser hair removal suitable for?
The treatment is suitable for both light and darker pigmented skin types, provided the proper laser technique is used. At DokterEs , we work exclusively with approved laser equipment, With which, depending on the skin type, we always offer a safe and effective laser technique. In addition, the lasers are operated only by well-trained professionals.
Pros and cons of laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is ideal when you are done with time-consuming, short-term hair removal techniques such as shaving, plucking or waxing. Also, if you suffer from ingrown hairs, laser hair removal offers a solution in reducing symptoms. When performed by an experienced specialist with the right equipment, laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to remove your unwanted hair growth. We carefully discuss all risks and concerns before starting a procedure.

Did you know!
...Your laser hair removal is only effective while your hairs still contain color and therefore are not gray?
Laser hair removal works by heating the pigment (melanin) in the hair root. This pigment absorbs the energy from the laser, damaging the hair follicle and stopping hair growth. Once hairs become gray, white or very light blonde, there is hardly any pigment left in them. As a result, the laser no longer "sees" the hairs and cannot remove them properly.
So if you notice that your hair is slowly turning grayer, it is wise not to wait too long to have laser hair removal. This way, you will take full advantage of the effect and avoid having only shaving or tweezing later.

Our laser treatments are performed only by our experienced skin therapist. Did you know that Rachelle has spent years training other skin therapists, doctors, and beauty experts in the safe and effective application of laser treatments?
During a consultation, we will discuss together what your needs are and which laser treatment is most appropriate for you.
During an initial consultation, you will discuss your needs with our skin therapist. We determine which laser type is suitable and draw up a personal treatment plan. You will receive an explanation of preparation, such as:
- Do not sunbathe, tan or use self-tanner 2 weeks prior to treatment
- No waxing or tweezing 6 weeks prior to treatment and between treatments
- Shave 48 to 24 hours in advance
After disinfection and marking off the area, the treatment is started. During the treatment, special safety glasses are always worn and you may feel short heatpulses on the skin. Most people experience this as a feeling of a rubber band being shot against the skin or a needle prick andfind this quite tolerable. The skin therapist always takes your personal reaction to the laser into account .
Afterwards, the skin may be a little red or feel warm. This usually subsides within a few minutes. Our skin therapist always goes over aftercare instructions with you in detail. We recommend:
- Cooling if desired
- Avoid sunlight for at least 2 weeks after treatment and always use a protective SPF50
- No intense exercise, hot showers/(steam) baths, or sauna for 48 hours after treatment
Frequently Asked Questions
We understand that you may still have questions about treatment. Therefore, we are here to give you all the information you need and offer answers to some common questions in advance.
After laser hair removal, it is best to stay out of direct sun for at least 2 weeks. This advice applies both before and after treatment:
Beforehand: no sun or tanning bed for at least 2 weeks to reduce the risk of pigment shifts (hyper- or hypopigmentation).
Afterwards: avoid sun for at least 2 weeks, as your skin is more sensitive after the laser treatment and may react faster with irritation or pigmentation.
If you do find yourself outside, always use a high SPF (at least factor 30, preferably 50) on the treated areas or wear covering clothing. For darker skin types or treatments in the summer, your practitioner may sometimes advise you to be careful for even longer.
In a nutshell:
🌞 2 weeks of no sun or tanning before and after your laser treatment
🌞 Always use SPF and protect skin properly
Avoid sun and tanning beds:
No direct sun on the treated area for at least 2 weeks after treatment. Always use a high SPF (30-50).
Do not exfoliate or peel:
The skin may be sensitive. Wait a few days before using scrubs, peels or aggressive skin care.
No perfume or perfumed products:
This can cause additional irritation on the treated skin.
Laser hair removal can lead to a significant reduction in hair growth, especially for dark hair on light skin.
- On average, 6 to 8 treatments are required
- Sessions take place at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks
- A maintenance treatment is recommended every 6 to 12 months
Effectiveness depends on:
- Hair color and thickness
- Skin Type
- Personal factors such as hormones (e.g., PCOS), metabolism, compliance with aftercare recommendations, genes, etc.
Therefore, 100% permanent hair reduction can never be guaranteed. The assumption is 80%-95% hair reduction after treatment.
Not all hair types (such as gray, white or light blonde hair) respond to the laser. This is discussed in advance during the intake.
Laser hair removal treatments at DokterEs are generally not considered painful. Both of our lasers have a built-in cooling system, which automatically cools the skin with each flash.
The sensation of the flash is commonly described as a rubber band shot against the skin or a mini needle prick. This lasts only a fraction of a second each time.
Of course, everyone's sensation is different. Therefore, our skin therapist will always take into account your personal sensation and adjust the laser appropriately for safe but effective results.
At DokterEs We maintain transparent rates. Prices are calculated per zone and per session. In addition, we offer combination packages, where you receive benefits when lasering multiple zones at the same time. An overview of all our laser hair removal rates can be found here.
Laser hair removal is a very safe treatment, but only in well-trained knowledge with the right knowledge and experience in the field of laser hair removal.
Pigment spots after laser hair removal are usually caused by a disruption of the pigment (melanin) in your skin. This can have several causes:
- Sun exposure: if your skin is exposed to the sun shortly before or after treatment, the risk of hyperpigmentation (dark spots) greatly increases.
- Excessive energy settings: improperly set laser equipment can introduce too much heat into the skin, activating or damaging pigment cells.
- Dark skin types: darker skin has more melanin present, which increases the risk of pigment reactions if the treatment is not properly tailored.
- Irritation or wounds: if the skin becomes irritated or small burns occur, this can lead to inflammatory reactions and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Therefore, it is important to carefully analyze your skin beforehand, choose the right settings and use sun protection carefully.
Choosing the best laser for laser hair removal depends mainly on your skin type, hair color, and the area to be treated. The Alexandrite laser and the Nd:YAG laser are considered the most effective lasers for permanent hair removal.
The Alexandrite laser (755 nm) is very powerful for lighter skin types (skin types I-III) and optimally targets the pigment in the hair root. This laser works quickly and often gives visibly smooth results after just a few sessions.
On the contrary, the Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) is better suited for darker skin types (IV-VI). This wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin and bypasses superficial pigment, making it safe for dark or sun-tanned skin.
The best choice is always a laser that is professionally set based on a skin and hair analysis. At DokterEs , we therefore work with the most advanced lasers and tailor the treatment plan to your unique skin and needs. This way you can safely achieve a long-lasting smooth result.

Laser hair removal is popular for both men and women seeking long-lasting smooth skin without shaving or waxing. The most commonly chosen treatment areas are the armpits, legs and intimate areas.
A combination treatment of the Brazilian, armpits, and lower legs is especially often booked, as these areas together provide optimal comfort and a groomed appearance.
By treating multiple zones simultaneously, you benefit from a combination package at a more economical rate.
For intimate hair removal, you can choose between a bikini laser treatment and a Brazilian laser treatment.
With the bikini laser hair removal, only the hairs along the bikini line are removed. Brazilian laser hair removal goes further and treats the entire pubic area, including the pubic area, buttock seam and possibly around the anus. Here you can choose whether to keep a small stripe or have everything completely smoothed out.
After a laser hair removal treatment, you usually see results after 1 to 3 weeks. During this period, the treated hairs fall out on their own. It then seems for a while as if all hairs are gone-and that is indeed a very nice effect, especially if, for example, you go on vacation and want a smooth result.
It is important to note that some of the hair will return over time. This is because only the hairs in the active growth phase (about 20-30% of all hairs) are permanently destroyed during a session. Therefore, multiple treatments are required for long-lasting results.
Summary:
✅ After 1-3 weeks, all treated hairs fall out-your skin feels smooth and stubble-free.
✅ After a few weeks, some hairs grow back because not all hairs are actively growing at the same time.
✅ After an average of 6-8 treatments, 80-90% of hair growth is permanently reduced.
Tip: Want to take full advantage of that hair-free phase? Then schedule your treatment 3-4 weeks before your vacation. That way you can enjoy smooth skin without shaving or waxing during your trip.
Laser hair removal gives long-lasting results, but it is not always 100 percent permanent. How long it works varies from person to person and depends on factors such as hormones, hair type, and body area.
✅ After a full course of treatment averages 6-8 treatments:
– 80-90% of hairs are gone for long periods of time.
- The hairs that still return are often thinner, softer and less visible.
✅ Maintenance:
- Many people choose to have maintenance treatments 1-2 times a year to maintain optimal results.
✅ Lifetime effect:
- For most areas, you can count on years of less to no hair growth, especially in the armpits, bikini line and legs.
- Hormones (e.g., pregnancy, menopause or medication) can still cause new hairs to develop over time.
In short, laser hair removal works for most people for years, provided you follow a full course of treatment and do maintenance as needed.

Laser Techniques
At DokterEs , we use two advanced laser types, each with its own area of application:
- Alexandrite laser (GentleLase Pro-U)
This laser operates at a wavelength of 755 nm and is especially effective on lighter skin types with dark hair. The energy is efficiently absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles.
- Nd:YAG laser (GentleYAG Pro)
This laser has a wavelength of 1064 nm and is specifically designed for toned to very highly pigmented skin types. The laser's energy is delivered deeper to only the hair follicles, minimizing the risk of energy absorption into the skin pigment and reducing the risk of pigment shifts.
Both lasers include a built-in cooling spray, which effectively cools the skin throughout the treatment.
Both the Alexandrite and the Nd;YAG laser can be used to treat light brown to dark hair.
Treating white, gray, blonde and reddish (down) hairs is not possible through laser treatments, as these hairs contain little to no pigment to absorb and conduct the laser light.
Which laser we use is determined based on your skin and hair color and the treatment area.
