Pigment spots in brief
What exactly are pigment spots? They are darker discolorations of the skin that can range from light and/or dark brown to reddish-brown spots. They are often caused by changes in the pigment skin production.
Due to various causes, the "pigment factories" in the skin can work too hard, producing too much skin pigment that accumulates and becomes visible as a darker discoloration.
There can be several causes of brown discoloration in the skin. There are often multiple contributing factors, such as:
- Overexposure to the sun without (sufficient) SPF: Sunlight is one of the biggest causes of pigmentation and skin aging in general.
- Hormonal fluctuations: Pregnancy, contraception or (hormonal) medications can cause pigment spots (for example, melasma, also known as pregnancy mask).
- Genetic predisposition and aging: Age spots are common with aging, due to the buildup of sun exposure over the years.
- Skin damage: Acne, wounds or inflammation can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
- Aggressive skin care/skin treatments: The (improper) application of strong active ingredients in skin care products and/or intensive treatments can cause excessive irritation in the skin, triggering pigmentation.
Often, sun is a factor that causes other causes to be triggered or amplified. Proper protection from direct sun exposure is therefore essential to prevent new pigmentation.

- Dermamelan: a medical depigmenting treatment (mask and home protocol) known worldwide as the gold standard for melasma, sun spots and other hyperpigmentation. It addresses both existing pigmentation spots and the creation of new pigment, ensuring long-lasting results.
- Chemical peels : for example, TCA peels or superficial acids such as glycolic acid and lactic acid. These remove the upper layers of skin with accumulated pigment and accelerate cell renewal, making the skin more even.
- CO2 laser : fractions of the skin are evaporated in a controlled manner. This removes superficial pigment, refines skin texture and stimulates collagen. Suitable for sun damage and combined indications (wrinkles + pigment).
- Professional medical skincare (cosmeceuticals) : contain ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, retinoids and pigment inhibitors to reduce existing discoloration and limit new pigment production.
