Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery is a minor cosmetic-surgical procedure in which excess skin, fat and/or muscle tissue around the eyelids is removed or repositioned. The treatment can be performed for a variety of reasons:
- Heavy, droopy eyelids
- Tired look
- Makeup that no longer stays put
- Eyelid eczema due to excess skin irritation.
- Headaches due to heavy eyelids
- Limiting vision.
In addition to the functional benefit, eyelid surgery also provides a fresh, open and rested appearance to the face.

before and after - 2 weeks
upper eyelid surgery
This is the result two weeks after an upper eyelid surgery performed by Dr. Gulnez Demirtas. In this procedure, excess skin on the upper eyelid is carefully removed to open up the eye area and restore a rested, fresh look. After about two weeks, most of the swelling is gone and the scar is already barely visible. The gaze looks lifted and natural, while maintaining its own expression.
The effect of eyelid surgery
Drooping eyelids are usually caused by a combination of factors associated with aging.
- As you age, the skin loses elasticity and firmness, causing the skin above the eyes to sag and sag.
- Eyebrows also gradually droop a bit due to sagging of the forehead and the muscles that normally provide some elevator.
This combination of sagging skin and lowered eyebrow position causes the upper eyelids to look increasingly heavy and full, sometimes even partially obstructing vision.
Eyelid surgery is suitable for people who suffer from:
- Drooping eyelids
- Heavy eyelids pressing on the eyelashes
- A tired look, despite adequate sleep
- Headaches or tired eyes at the end of the day
- Limited vision at the upper end of the visual field
Symptoms often arise gradually, as a result of skin laxity. A Eyelid surgery, then, is an effective solution that not only improves appearance, but can also alleviate functional complaints, such as feeling tired and limiting vision.
A eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) is definitely not only suitable for upper eyelids. There are also procedures for the lower eyelids, but these tend to be more complex.
A lower eyelid correction focuses on removing or relocating excess fat, excess skin, and sometimes sagging muscle under the eyes. This is appropriate in cases such as:
Accumulated fat pads ("eye bags")
Wrinkled or sagging skin under the eyes
Shading and tired appearance
The treatment is more complex than an upper eyelid correction because:
- The lower eyelids directly adjacent to the eye itself, making accuracy important to avoid complications such as eyelid pulling outward(ectropion).
- Multiple layers of tissue (skin, muscle, fat) are often involved, requiring a more layered approach.
- Skin elasticity and muscle tension play a major role in the final result.
An experienced physician carefully assesses what type of lower eyelid correction is needed (e.g., transconjunctival through the inside of the eyelid or through an incision on the outside) and whether additional techniques (such as fat transfer or laser treatment) are desirable.
Alternative
A nice alternative to a surgical lower eyelid correction is treatment with a CO2 laser where significant tightening and softening of the wrinkles under the eyes can be obtained with intensive treatment.
Eyelid surgery is safe if performed by an experienced and qualified physician. Although surgical treatment may sound more invasive, eyelid surgery is a relatively minor procedure. At DokterEs , surgeries are performed only by experienced and trained cosmetic doctors. As with any treatment, side effects and complications can occur, such as:
Possible side effects of eyelid surgery include:
Swelling and bruising around the eyes (especially in the first week)
Dry or watery eyes
Sensitivity to light
Temporary cloudy vision
Itching or pulling sensation at the scars
In rare cases: infection, post-bleeding or asymmetry
- Incomplete wound closure
- Time incomplete closing of the eyelids (usually due to swelling).
Good aftercare helps prevent complications. Here, of course, you will be extensively supported with personal attention.
Before and after results after 2 weeks
This is the result two weeks after an upper eyelid surgery performed by Dr. Gulnez Demirtas. In this procedure, excess skin on the upper eyelid is carefully removed to open up the eye and restore a rested, fresh look. Symptoms, such as headaches and limited vision, can also improve significantly.

Results
A fresher eye look and youthful appearance
Results are usually well visible within just a few weeks. Complaints such as a heavy feeling on the eyes or limited vision disappear almost immediately. The eyes look fresher and more youthful.
After the procedure, you can count on:

Any additional treatments are rarely required, but are discussed in consultation. Sometimes a brow elevator with botox can be an alternative.

Course of treatment
Our approach is based on safety, expertise and
personal care. We guide you with attention and care from the consultation to during aftercare.
An eyelid correction at DoctorEs begins with a comprehensive consultation with a cosmetic doctor. During the consultation, your symptoms, wishes, and options are discussed and we take photographs.
Eyelid surgery is performed under local anesthesia. Thus, no intoxication or anesthesia is required. After the skin is thoroughly cleaned and covered sterile, is accurately measured, marked, and the doctor will remove excess skin.
Tiny sutures are applied very closely. The treatment takes about 1.5 hours, after which you can return home as usual.
During the days following surgery, the skin will slowly recover by the day. After a few weeks, you will see the results. We list for you how recovery goes in the period after surgery:
Right after the procedure
- Tingling or burning sensations around the eyelids.
- Swelling, redness and mild bruising.
- Tearing eyes or blurred vision due to applied ointment.
First 48 hours
- Swelling may increase somewhat.
- Light pressure or headache relief is possible.
- Rest and cooling accelerate recovery.
First 1-2 weeks
- Bruising and swelling gradually decrease.
- Sutures are removed after ± 5-7 days.
- Non-physical work can usually be resumed.
After 2 weeks
- Scars are still red/pink, but flat.
- Sports and heavy lifting are allowed again.
After 3-6 months
- Definitive results visible; scars fade to skin-colored/white.
Frequently Asked Questions
We can imagine that you still see with questions. Herewith the most common questions.
The treatment is performed under local anesthesia, so you won't feel any pain during the procedure. The placement of the anesthetic can be sensitive. However, this greatly depends on the needle and the patience of the practitioner. At DokterEs , we take the time to numb the eyelids slowly so that this moment is rated as barely painful. Afterwards, you may experience some sensitivity or a pulling sensation, but this is usually tolerable and temporary.
Most people resume their daily activities after about 7 days, at which time the stitches may also come out. Swelling and bruising usually subside within 1 to 2 weeks. After 6 weeks the final result is clearly visible, the scars may remain red a little longer, but because they fall into the eye crease this is soon hardly visible.
Upper eyelid surgery is sometimes reimbursed if vision is severely impaired. However, this requires a medical indication and referral letter from a physician, and the treatment must be performed in a hospital.
Incisions are placed in the natural folds of skin, so scars are barely visible. With proper healing, they usually fade after a few months.
alternatives
Eye contour enhancement without surgical eyelid surgery
While eyelid surgery is very effective for drooping eyelids and/or excess skin and fatty tissue around the eyes, we are happy to discuss all options during a consultation and create a treatment plan that fully meets your personal needs.
In addition to eyelid correction, there are alternative treatments for improving indications around the eyes, such as
- Eyebrow elevator with botox: for subtle lifting of the eyebrows and eyelids.
- Fillers: To soften eye bags and deeper lines around the eyes.
- CO2 laser: THE treatment for tightening the upper eyelids and improving stubborn wrinkles under and next to the eyes, which cannot be adequately reduced with injectables.
- Depuff & Lift facial massage: During this massage, we work on the deeper layers under the skin, such as the fascia (connective tissue layer). This connective tissue can become adhered due to stress, tension, or aging. By loosening these adhesions, we elevator the eyebrows, cheeks, and jawline, improve circulation, and stimulate lymphatic drainage. This helps reduce facial fluid buildup (depuffing) and gives your face a natural elevator.
- Skincare: You can also use skincare to soften fine lines and wrinkles.
- We offer the P-TIOX serum from Skinceuticals. This anti-aging peptide serum reduces contraction lines and is seen as the complement to botulinum toxin injections but can also be used separately from botox injections to reduce wrinkles.
- In addition, of course, we have effective eye creams for:
- reducing dark circles: Age element brightening eye cream
- firming the skin around the eyes: Age element firming eye cream
- reducing contraction lines and blue circles: Age element anti-wrinkle eye cream.
